Portuguese Wines the World Still Doesn't Know

Portugal is a small country with a wine diversity few can match. Over 250 native grape varieties — most of them found nowhere else — and regions stretching from the Atlantic coast to the far interior. And yet, much of this richness still goes unnoticed abroad. We travel through four regions via the producers that best represent them in the Quick Wines catalogue.

Alentejo: character and generosity

Portugal's largest wine region. The hot, dry interior climate, together with schist and granite soils, gives full-bodied reds with ripe fruit and soft tannins — approachable for any palate, yet deep enough for those who want more.

Lima Mayer is one of the region's most consistent names: it starts with the XATÔ (a full, direct red), moves through Subsídio for everyday meals, and climbs to the classic Lima Mayer, the Reserva (Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Petit Verdot) and the single-varietal Petit Verdot. Já-te-Disse represents the region's most artisanal, limited-production side — plenty of work in the vineyard, little correction in the cellar — with its Petit Verdot Grande Reserva Platinum Edition as the highlight. And Winelife completes the trio with Sinner (Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon) and Sinless, made to evolve slowly in bottle.

Douro: history, schist and ancient vines

One of the oldest wine regions in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Century-old vines on steep schist terraces above the river give wines of great complexity and longevity — both the legendary Port and world-class dry reds.

Our leading Douro name is Quinta do Combro, from the historic house of JM Calem: old-vine field-blend wines, from the white to the Colheita Especial, reflecting the Douro at its most authentic — we've given it its own article, Quinta do Combro and the Old Vines of the Douro. Quinta do Vallado has deep roots here: the Adelaide, from an old-vine plot in Rio Torto, is a collector's wine, and the house also makes top-tier Port. Martha's celebrates the Douro with an accessible, complete range — from the Colheita white (Viosinho, Rabigato, Gouveio) to the Vinha do Legado Reserva. And Quinta de Macedos represents the most contemporary Douro, with the Pinga do Torto and Lagar de Macedos reds, foot-trodden in granite lagares.

Dão: mineral, fresh and built to age

Perhaps Portugal's most underrated region abroad. Nestled in the central mountains, with granite soils and an Atlantic influence, it gives some of the country's most complex whites and exceptionally age-worthy reds.

Quinta de Lemos, with its Dona Paulette line, shows the potential of Dão whites — powerful, structured, long-finishing, with several vintages available to explore their evolution. No Rule Wines presents the Código project (Origem, Granius and Encruzado), spotlighting the Encruzado grape, exclusive to the Dão and of rare aromatic richness.

Trás-os-Montes: the wines that escape the rules

In the northern interior, with an extreme continental climate, they make wines that break the mould. Casa do Joa works at altitude: the Alto do Joa Branco is an Orange Wine (skin-contact white), singular and complex, with a version made without added yeasts, enzymes or sulphites; the reserve reds respect the terroir; and the Rosé stands out for its unusual colour and complexity.
